I wanted to create a page that would provide you with an idea of all the car parts and truck parts that you will be able to search on this site. So I thought why not have some fun and discuss parts that I can work into the letters of AUTOMOTIVE PRICES. Transmissions include the ability to select one of several different gear ratios. In this case, most of the gear ratios (simply called "gears") are used to slow down the output speed of the engine and increase torque. Most modern gearboxes are used to increase torque while reducing the speed of a prime mover output shaft (e.g. a motor drive shaft). This means that the output shaft of a gearbox will rotate at slower rate than the input shaft. This reduction in speed will produce a mechanical advantage, causing an increase in torque. A gearbox can be setup to do the opposite and provide an increase in shaft speed with a reduction of torque. Some of the simplest gearboxes merely change the physical direction in which power is transmitted. A manual transmission contains cogs for selecting gears. These cogs have matching teeth, called dog teeth, which means that the rotation speeds of the two parts have a synchronizer, a device that uses frictional contact to bring the two parts to the same speed, and a locking mechanism called a blocker ring to prevent engagement of the teeth (full movement of the shift lever into gear) until the speeds are synchronized. Wow that was an automotive mouth full. What makes sense to me is I can tell by the sound of my engine when I need to shift!
